Hardware firewall configuration

I am using a broadband router to connect a small LAN to my broadband cable
ISP. The router is a D-Link DI-604 which includes a hardware firewall.

I have read the manual carefully but can't find the answer to my question
which concerns the configuration of the firewall. There is a facility to
block or enable data from/to specific IP addresses/ports etc (looks very
complicated to set up) but nowhere can I find any reference to the DEFAULT
firewall configuration.

In simple terms my question is this. If I merely set up the connections
from the cable modem to the router and from the router to the PCs on the
LAN, leaving the firewall in its default configuration, is my network being
protected from undesirable access attempts from the outside world?

Malcolm,

It depends upon what the factory defaults setting is?

To know if your PC is vulnerable, try these online security testing sites:

The following are all firewall testers.

http://www.firewallguide.com/test.htm
http://hackerwhacker.com/
http://www.dslreports.com/secureme_go
http://www.auditmypc.com/
https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
http://grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm (different approach to firewall testing, by
Steve Gibson)

Last but not the least, its Microsoft's baseline security analyser (not a
firewall tester, but tests the overall security)
