There is no software that can come close to being
comprehensive enough to make an accurate diagnosis on what
is essentially an unknown variable- the myriad combinations
of hardware and software on a computer (besides a fixed OEM
system). Whatever the software ended up finding, should be
as easily revealed a number of ways without it and THEN the
troubleshoting of the problem may still be as lengthly.

In other words, most such software is unnecessary, rather
than a targeted test of the specific subsystem when there is
a problem. You might try "Everest" though, the last
uncrippled version was 1.51, but was discontinued near the
end of last year to boost their commercial version sales.

If you have your motherboard CD there might be a utility on there that
might not even be on the menu items list.

Either that or go back to the motherboard company online and look for a
utility.

to test the memory...google for memtest86

to test the harddrive...go to the website of the HD mfg and they should have
a free diagnostic utility

there are many programs that essentially are not for troubleshooting
hardware problems but with combination of these you couls very
effectively pinpoint the problem.

I personally use combinations with:

3dmark
memtest
prime
variety off hdd test utilities(mostly original from vendors for that
particular hdd -powermax,seatool,hitachi tool etc..)
S&M
PCmark
some boot cd-s(UBCD etc..)

+ some others i can't even remember right now :)
also it is good to have little gadget for testing power supply voltage,
it's inexpensive and helps you a lot with PSU problems that are
generally hard to detect if your computer boots up of course :)

i have app.95% problems solved with that stuff,

or as you said you could buy a professional hardware/software combined
tool if you think it will worth it
