Hardware Detection

I'm trying to learn how to write a hardware detection program for an
386-architecture machine. Does anyone know of a good reference or listing
for learning how to do this?

Also, if anyone knows of a listing for standard memory locations (i.e. where
the system stores the state of the keyboard), that would be great.

You should post this to the programming ng such as
alt.comp.lang.learn.c-c++ (depend on what programming language you
intend to use).
