Hi Folks,

I have 2 home computers networked together with a crossover cable. One
box is running Windows ME and the other has Windows XP home. All was
running well until I installed SP2 in Windows XP. During the install I
shut down everything not needed by the system. I also unplugged the
crossover cable. Then I installed SP2 in the XP box. Everything seems
to be running OK for over two weeks. The problem is with the network.
When the Windows ME box is up and running and then I start the XP box
I start getting error messages on the ME box "System has detected a
conflict for IP address 169.254.115.154 (address is the ME box, XP box
is 169.254.115.153) with the system hardware address
16:09:29:04:11:05. The correct address for the ME box is
16:09:29:04:11:05 but when I run "winipcfg" the hardware address shows
as 16:09:25:04:11:05 (note difference between 29 & 25). When the XP
box is up and running and then I start the ME box no error message.
Does anyone have a clue or do I have to start over with SP2. Both NIC
cards are Realtek RTL8139(A) PCI fast Ethernet Adapter (onboard chips)
on an AOpen mobo. I have played with repair the network and check IP
addresses on both and all is correct including masks. I can't find out
how to change the hardware address which I believe will fix the
problem. If I change the IP address will that fix the problem?

Thanks

It looks like windows is setting up the IP addresses. If you are just
connecting the two computers together you could give them each a static IP
under network connections.
