Hardware and the Registry

I have freshly installed the professional version of
Windows XP. After Windows gets installed and I start
putting drivers in, it works fine till I start doing
updates. I generally save the Service Pak 1 till last.
But somehow durning the other updates, my CD-RW, DVD-ROM,
Webcam, and Soundcard become disabled. Troubleshooting
says to uninstall and reinstall. But that doesn't work. I
told a worker at a computer store this problem and he
said it happens to them periodically. He said something
about changing a line or two in the registry. There is a
page on Microsoft.com that talks about this but I can't
seem to find it. Very simply, does anyone know exactly
what and where to type in the registry to fix the these
hardware problems especially the CD-RW?

Service Pack 1 should always be done FIRST! Some of the other updates
require to find SP1.
