is there a compromise in hardware between a hand-held and a laptop in
respect to screen size. the smallest screen i've found is 10". is there
something a bit smaller like 6" to 8"?

i'm looking for shop hardened equipment that field users can manage carrying
all day and can utilize more data entry real estate...and having a devil of
a time.

tia,

A screen in what format? 800x600 at 6" to 8"? I'm not aware of any. You
should probably check the standard list of suppliers: Intermec, Symbol,
Psion Teklogix. I see that Data Evolution is coming out with something
about 9"; you might see what else they have. A Google search on "windows
ce" full screen handheld gives a large number of hits, including some of
those above. We don't have a handheld device with a really large screen,
ourselves...

Steve,

The only ruggedized device I've seen of with the screen dimensions you are
looking for
is the Panasonic Toughbook-34, which just runs WinXP with a touch screen
LCD.
Screen is 8.4" 800x600 resolution. Even the ruggedized Tablet PCs have
larger
screens than this.

thanks for the info...guess what we are currently using in our field tests?
good ol' panasonic toughbook.

we've got it mounted like a police cruiser computer. the end-user's are
train car repairmen and complain that it is too cumbersome to carry and a
pain to have to hop in and out of the truck to enter repair details. another
reason we are investigating this is that the car inspectors lack a truck and
are worried they'd set it down on a car during inspection only to forget to
get it...and, watch as $4500 of equipment "eased on down the road."

thanks for the info...it is greatly appreciated. at least by comparison of
experience, it seems were on the right track (pun intended ;^)
