I think my HD is on its way out just need some assurances before i toss it
out and buy another. Its a fujitsu 20gib hd on an older pc using W98.I got a
BSOD one day saying cant write to c drive disk error. The drive was also
slowing down and speeding up.I tried scandisk and it found one bad sector so
as a last resort i formatted the drive and installed W98 again. It worked
fine for a while but i only had it on for 1 hr or so.Tonight i left the pc
running for a few hrs to hear it spinning up and down and when i tried to do
anything got the BSOD again and cant write to c drive. Its 4 yrs old is it
kaput ?

Try a different power connector and if you've got one, try another IDE cable, if it still has
problems, most likely the drive is fuxored, but it sounds more like teh power and/or IDE cable could
be bad...possibly the entire PS...but then again it could also be a problem with the motherboard.
Really you need to do some investigation. Right now yer just pissing in the wind and making a mess
of yourself, you need to approach the problem with a lil more common sense. Try another power
cable, try another IDE cable, maybe a different power supply, might wanna try the drive in another
system, etc, etc. The last thing you want to go and do is buy a brand new drive, stick it in, and
then wind up ****in it up with bad spots cause some other part is messed up and you couldn't take
the bother to check first. o_O

So it started doing this without your doing anything inside the system or
moving it, therefore minimizing the chances of disturbing the cables in
any way?

Generally what you describe is a bearing failure, you may find the drive
completely dead at any moment, if it seizes suddenly there is no chance of
getting anything off without a professional data recovery center
disassembling the drive (big $$$$).

Download and run the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostics, AFTER copying
off any valuable data. I'd go ahead and replace the drive... buying a new
one now instead of waiting. You might find that these bad sectors have
lost some important system files though, you may need to reinstall the OS
again after you get a new drive.

Hi,

Sounds like you've pinned it down correctly. Most hdd manufacturers have
a hdd utility available on their website that can be downloaded to run
diagnostics on their drives. You might want to verify your findings by
running it.

Thanks for the replys
Ive d/loaded the diagnostic tool from fujitsu and will try that later today.
This started when i installed a new mobo a Soltek. However as suggested i
tried the drive in another system and the same problem was there.I thought
that formatting the drive and reinstalling W98 had fixed it until last
night. The power supply is 4 yrs old too but as i had everything working ok
for a few hrs at least surely this would rule out a PS problem.

Go here,

Although made by,"Maxtor" and"Free" it can diagnose and test most
other makes of hard drive failures.
