Not much information there, shaun.

Unless you have 'copied' DVD's or CD's to your hard drive then it is the
DVD/CD-ROM that actually enables them to play. So do you mean that when you
put a CD or DVD into your CD/DVD drive they don't play? If so what happens?
Are there any error messages? Did DVD's play previously without any problem?
What version of Windows Vista are you running? The more information you can
give, the better it will be for someone to help you.

i have vista business last time the hard drive stopped workking because of the ipod. the computer can,t find cd-rom software.i can,t use the hard drive to play dvds or cds

Can the PC find the CD-ROM? When you turn on the PC does the CD-ROM light
come on? Have you checked the BIOS to see if the CD-ROM is registered there?

When in Windows Explorer can you see the CD-ROM? If you put a CD/DVD into
the drive what exactly happens? Does the CD-ROM spin? What software is the
CD-ROM supposed to be looking for?

I'm sorry for having to ask more questions, but at the moment i'm not sure
whether the CD-ROM is at fault or the Hard drive. Does the machine boot into
Windows Vista business?

I dont think the original poster understands the difference. He thinks the
CD-ROM is the hard drive.

Regrds

Well, Terry, I'll give him the benefit oft he doubt on whether he knows the
difference or not. Without knowing one way or other which is causing the
problem, no one on the newsgroup can help him and the only alternative is to
take the machine to a repair shop.

my cd/dvd rom doesn't appear on my computer , when i put a disk in it try to
read it but it doesn't start or even show up. the light on the drive show up
when computer is started . this is what shows up in my device manager under
dvd/cd rom drive (Windows cannot start this hardware device because its
configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code
19) it was workin before and after up install vista home basic.

Another possibility, that you did not mention is the DVD software. A file
could have gotten corrupted. If that is the case a simple re-install would
likely solve the problem. Or a driver maybe is not working properly. It is
best to try the easy fixes first, then proceed to the harder ones. Also
could be a fragmented harddrive or its too crowded. Or low on memory. Also
sometimes unplugging, then replugging things in makes a difference. Strange
as it seems there have been times when I unplugged a card from my motherboard
and re-seated it and it all of a sudden worked, jarred loose.
Lots of things here that can be checked out, depending on a person's level
of expertise.
