harddrive transfer

Hello all,

I know this is gonna be a little odd but
I need a cable\adapter that would connect a laptop's
harddrive to a pc's harddrive, does such a product exsist
or can I hook a laptop say 1 year old hp "harddrive" to a
2 year old "compaq"? The reason is that my friends laptop
died and he wants to rescue the data as cost effectively
as possible so I thought this up to save him money.
