harddrive thinks it's 2,5 times the size

Two years ago a restore disc of someone else's computer was used on mine.
Apparantly this was a fatal error since now my computer thinks its harddrive
is 20 gigs instead of 8. I can't scan it ( I've tried this with several
programs), and I can't defrag. It simply errors out. It is now basically
acting like a flat planet: files tend to drop off when they come to the end.
Apart from this, I have to scrub it every few months because it starts
acting weird. This might be as a result of my not being able to defrag. I
have tried scrubbing it several times with a 'clean' installation disc but
to no avail. It always picks up the incorrect harddrive size through BIOS.
Could someone please tell me how to deal with this problem? I am sure that
if I would understand BIOS a bit better I could fix it, but I find it hard
to get good information on this peticular issue.
Any and every suggestion is more than welcome.

First thing to do here is back up all your data files that you consider
important and worth saving. If your system is running well enough I'd
suggest saving those files on a CD-R if you have a burner. If not, then
perhaps a Zip disk, or a USB thumb drive, or as a last resort 1.44 mb
floppies.

Most likely it will be necessary for you to completely get rid of all
partitions on your hard drive. It would be helpful to know what operating
system you're running to determine if your file system is FAT, FAT32 or
NTFS.

Once this information is known folks can give you better support to get your
BIOS reading your drive correctly and reinstalling the operating system.

Helpful information includes: Operating System, CPU (processor being used
and its speed), RAM (how much you have), how old your computer is.
