need some help to find a solution for replacement
harddrive installation. tried to use new maxtor install
disk to copy old harddrive. what is the best way to get
this job done painlessly.

Hello

well you can use Norton's Ghost or, just do a clean
install of XP on the new haddrive and then copy your
data over, however this is the best way, but it's longer

I've tried ghost, but not had sucess, others have. I use
Drive image 2002, it will let you clone a drive, or back
up to cd/dvd the interface is better in the windows than
in dos, it gives you more choices. If you have SP 1 on
your o/s there is a slight workaround if it does not
work.. before you do this, copy boot.ini, ntdetect,
ntldr, autoexec.bat, config.sys to a floppy, then you'll
have all the required files you need if it goes not
smoothly.
worst case after this if hd not recgnized is boot from
o/s disk, go to repair, run fixboot, fix mbr,
bootcfg/scan & set to default. this works..
been there, done it..

if you want to keep the old hard drive as a backup,
you'll need to hide the partition, so it won't see 2 o/s
hard disks..no problem in drive image..either.
I'm thinking about getting the new version...as much as
the 2002 has saved me..

Using the Maxtor disk is the most proficient. Print out the
instructions and follow them. If this is not working for you
I don't see how something more complicated will work.

Maxtor MaxBlast 3 has the utilities to do want you want....
I have several maxtaor 160 gB drives and xfer data with XP
all the time for backup.....

Set your new hd up as a slave drive... generally on Maxtor
you take all the jumpers out of the back (ie
master/slave) .... slave has jumper removed.

Leave your original Master Drive in ......

Set you bios to boot to CDROM....... make sure you put the
Maxblast CD into the cdrom drive......

When the computer boots to Maxblast 3.....select set up
hard drive..... it will ask you which drive you want to
set up and what op system..... select the new drive
(slave)..... follow the steps to the point where you want
to [set up your new hard drive as a "bootable drive"].
When you do this you will go to the next screen and it
will ask what partition size you want and what allocation
type.....(ie Fat 32, ntfs).... once it is set.... and you
click next.... it will format and begin coping all the
files from your master drive to your new slave drive and
it will be bootable.......

Pls note, this is a short description....there are a few
steps but I am assuming you will figure that out....

Also, if you have more than one partition.... after it
copies the main files from the "C" drive to the new
slave.... if you have a "d" drive, just return to the main
menu and then select "copy partition"..... in the next
screen you will have 2 windows... the 1st window on the
left is the source ....select your Master Drive (partition
#2).... then on the right side select your destination
drive.... the 2nd partiton on your new drive.... then
click next and it will copy the partition.

When all done you will have all the same files and the new
HD will be bootable......... just like the original Master.

Will the Maxtor utility copy the activation info-files to prevent the need
to Activate again? If not, perhaps someone can identify these files for me,
and I could manually back them up.
I've been having a few problems will my PC and some upgrades and I've had to
activate several times in the last month. I would rather avoid that again if
I could.

Thanks
Chuck
