A very annoying problem is happening with my HDs. I have 2 HDs: a 5G and a
10G and 2 comps to put them on: a 400Mhz and a 1200Mhz (= one old, one new).
1)When i set the 5GB HD on the 400Mhz it doesn't detect the HD.
2)When i set the 10GB HD on the 400Mhz it works.
3)When i set the 10GB HD on the 1200Mhz it doesn't detect the HD.
3)When i set the 5GB HD on the 1200Mhz it worked.

Now i was happy even with one HD working but one day i boot the comp
(1200Mhz + 5GB) and it doesn't detect the HD anymore!
I really don't understand, the hardware is not so new OK but it shouldn't do
that.
Any idea what could be the problem?

You need to have your BIOS flashed to the latest version available.
Normally, this would not be a good idea, as you risk permanently damaging
your hardware with this procedure. But the risk is small, and in cases
where hardware (like hard drives) are not recognized, it is a good idea.
Also, you need to check the CMOS battery on both computers. It is possible
one of them (or both) might need to be replaced.

On flashing the BIOS . . . generally, you need to create a DOS floppy boot
disk, then download a program from the web site of whoever made your
motherboard. Copy the flashing program and data file(s) to the floppy disk,
boot the floppy disk, then run the flash program to update your BIOS. Make
sure you have the correct data files for your motherboard on the floppy
before you run the program. After flashing the BIOS and removing the floppy
from the drive, the first thing you will need to do is reboot and then enter
BIOS setup (usually hit "DEL" as the computer is first starting) and restore
default settings and/or restore optimized settings. -Dave

How are the HDs set up in BIOS? If it is set to "Auto" try setting it
manually. You will need all the parameters such as number of cylinders,
heads, Etc. If you don't have the paper work on the HDs, you can visit the
company's web sites & get the info from their Tech depts.

Perhaps a problem with the master/slave settings?

Could be that one has been detected and partitioned as 'large', try
changing from LBA (or auto) to large in the BIOS.

Andy.

Ok thank you. I don't mind taking a risk with the BIOS because i won't be
able to use it anyway if i do nothing.

Well in that case, flashing the BIOS to the latest version can't hurt much,
and it might help. Go for it. -Dave
