Hello

System: Windows 2000 SP4 on a DELL Percision 330.

No big problems quite along time. But now the following problem: Win2k
starts normally - all desktop and tray icons are displayed correctly.

After one or two minutes after startup the LED on the harddisk is on all
the time and I am not able to start a program. Task manager doesn't
start neigther.

CPU is not hardly used - but the HD.

- Index service is disabled.
- mobsync is disabled.
- HD is checked for viruses

Startup in protected mode: no problem

Any ideas?

Check Event Viewer for errors. Check Device Manager for error codes and or
non-starting devices.

After checking all software and hardware it turns out that the
S.M.A.R.T. values of the harddisk are quite bad - so it seems to be
hardware problem and I have to replace the HD as soon as possible.

Thanks for letting us know.

I replaced the Harddisk - and everythings PC turns normally now.

What I learned: To check now and then the HD SMART values - they are can
announce problems...
