I was using my laptop when all of a sudden, it went haywire and starting
clicking somewhere in the computer. I had recently had a linksys cd in my
machine, and it started working. All of a sudden, it gave a message that it
could not be stopped. It now says I have no harddrive. Any suggestions? Do
I need to get a new harddrive? If so, where is the best place to get one for
an ibm laptop? and about how much would it cost? Thanks Rhonda

Before you buy anything, take your laptop to a local computer repair center.
There, ask them for an estimate on how much it will cost for a repair.
Hopefully, this estimate should be free. Then, price out a new laptop from
a local computer store. Whichever is more afforable, you decide.

I have seen laptop repairs that cost the price of a new one.

Depending on where you get the hard drive and how big it is, it's probably
going to be about $75 on the low end, and then it just depends on how big
you want.

After that, you've got to get Windows and all your programs loaded back on.
If you can install the hard drive and load Windows and the rest of it
yourself, the only cost is the drive itself. If you're paying someone by the
hour, it just depends on how much they need to do, and what they charge per
hour.

You could probably buy a replacement drive from IBM, but that's probably the
most expensive choice. Otherwise, just shop around. Just keep in mind that
you need a laptop drive, not a desktop one.

If you need data recovered off of the old drive, it just depends on how dead
it is.
