Harddisk controller error

Hello everybody. First apologies if this has been covered before but I'm
really beginning to go crazy about this: for some time now I've been getting
various disk errors. The most common one has been: "the driver detected a
controller error \device\harddisk0\D" Event ID 11. But it doesn't make any
sense 'cause I only have a C partition and furthermore I've run several tests
including Hitachis own drive test and there's been no errors what so ever.
I've just made a complete clean re-install in case it was a software issue. I
thought maybe Demon Tools or Acronis True Image had made some trouble.

Maybe I should tell some more about the errors: the first error was on boot
up when the system said "disk error, press alt, ctrl, del". Then I've had
some blue screens. I've written down the numbers but haven't really checked
them out yet. And then there's been some atapi errors and some CDROM errors.
At some points there's been something like 20-40 disk errors in the event
viewer.

The reason I'm asking all this is because I really want to avoid having to
send it off to service. I really need the machine at the moment.

Please help.

Machine info: Acer Aspire 1690 WLMi. 1 gb. 80 gb disk from Hitachi.

Oh dear. You could try a new driver for the IDE (or SATA) controller from
Acer's website... may just do the trick. If not, I'm afraid it's the
Service Center that awaits. If parts for notebook were as easily available
as they are for desktops..... well I guess the notebook manufacturer's
wouldn't be happy bunnies.

It's the reason I still keep my ancient Toshiba P3 850mhz notebook. In an
emergency, it may be slow but it still works. Not quite as fast as my Core
2 Duo Toshiba but it's still better than no notebook at all should the
primary one not be feeling well enough to travel.

It's a notebook unfortunately.

Yes. D is my CD/DVD drive. And that's the strange thing. I don't have a D
partition on my harddisk.

Oh, and thanks Cari. Better send it off then. Bugger.
