hard missing lett

I have done a fresh install of xp home on a new hard drive.
I would like to use the old hard drive as an additional drive.
I can't view the drive in explore, but can see it in management consol,
computer management, disk management. The volume does not have a letter.
There are old file's on the disk I would like to keep. How can I assign a
letter and access the drive without reformatting it?

Probably one of the safest ways is to put the old hard drive into an
external USB/Firewire drive enclosure. Make sure to properly follow
the instructions in how to mount the hard drive for use in this way.

While there are other alternatives, including mounting it as a slave
to the new hard drive or connected via the secondary IDE controller, an
error in mounting or setup or even an inadvertant Windows instruction
error could result in the loss of the data as well as performing an
accidental formatting or partitioning.
 
Thats good advice. I have an external encloser but the drive is SATA and the
enclosure is for IDE.
I'll try to slave it off the new hard drive, I have another computer that I
can also slave it from. Maybe I can extract the the files. It is only pics,
music and school work but I would like to keep it if possible.
 
If you can see it in disk management, right click on the partition with
the data (might say: 58.59 GB NTFS, healthy).

one of the options available is "change drive letter and paths"

Assign it a drive letter and voila.

(Putting in an enclosure is a good idea as well)
