Back when disk drives came in "retail" boxes, they sometimes
included these U shaped brackets and a ribbon cable. The brackets
would bolt to the side of the drive, and make up the difference
between 3.5" drive and 5.25" capable bay.

"Description

The StarTech.com 3.5 inch to 5.25 inch adapter brackets allow
3.5 inch drives hard drives to be mounted in standard 5.25 inch
drive bays. It works with IDE, SCSI, or SCA drives and includes
screws to mount the drive. "

Make sure you have enough screws for the job. This kit comes with
some screws - four screws hold the U shaped brackets to the disk
drive, but you may also need screws to hold the computer case "rail"
that allows the drive to slide in and out of the bay. Those screws
are probably in the box of screws that came with the computer
case.

You can see how the U shaped brackets "take up the slop" here.
You still need the slider rail attached to the side of the U
bracket, before this drive is ready to slide in place. The U
bracket doesn't slide on its own.

No, its 5.25". They make kits and have for many, many years for 3.5" wide
devices to fit these open bays. Rarer are those for 2.5". One hard drive
per bay, not plural.
