well i live in bohol philippines and the service here is not so good,
but even when i went to big town and tryed to plug them into pc's they
just didn't detect them, now one is only 1 year old and the other was
working also, so I can not work out for the life of me why they can
not be detected by the pc's I tried mounting them in external hard
drive cases but to no avail! any clues to why they are not detected?

A hard drive will not respond, unless the internal startup
routine finishes. It would make more sense, if the drive
controller was designed to always respond to the computer,
but it does not seem to work that way. Certain problems
will prevent any response from the drive.

If this is an IDE drive (with the ribbon cable interface),
are you sure the jumpers are set correctly ?

You know more about how the drive has been physically
handled than we do. Have you dropped it ? Or kicked
the computer the drive is normally seated in ? Was
there a recent lightning storm that hit a local power
line ? Perhaps you can think of an event that happened
recently, that could account for a drive failure.

They make cute little drive testers, like this one,
but really, this is no better than having your BIOS
detect the drive. And this costs $250.00 . Perhaps
someone makes a more reasonably priced one, that
you can buy locally.

I had the same problem.
The drives were OK.
I got an IDE to USB2 interface, and they all
showed up. So now I know the drives are
good and it's something in the PC causing the
issue.
