Plan to install a second (160GB) hard drive. Would like to partition the
drive and install the operating system as a backup on this drive. Is it
doable? And if yes, How?

To me it is not completely clear what you want to do. Do you want to
make a second partition to store a backup of your system? Or do you
want to install windows twice on one harddisk? As far as I know both
options are possible and usually quite pointless.

If you want to have a safe backup of your system, then you should not
place it on the same disk as the original data.

let me clarify. I will install a second hard drive which I will use
primarily for multimedia files. I thought it will be a good idea to have a
backup of the operating system (including the programs) on the second drive
in case the first one crashes. And I thought that partitioning the second
drive is a good idea. If it is a good idea and doable, then how?

Now I understand. You can use a program like Norton ghost for that. It
can backup your system drive into a compressed file on your data
drive.

definitely partition that drive...also look at Drive Image....Back Up My
PC......and Partition Magic...

thanks,

Looked for the software on the Internet and found software called DriveWorks
which costs about the same as the ones you listed but does both the
partitioning and backups. Are you familiar with it?
