I'm using win xp home. I have 2 hard drives. Drive 1 160g partitioned into 3.
C:60g, D:60g, E:40g. 2nd hard drive is F:40g. I was having problems with
Nortons save and restore. When all was done my D: drive which i'm using for
nortons files got messed up. Drives D. E and F used to say "new drive NTFS"
with the corresponding drive letter. Now the D drive just has the D. The "New
Drive and NTFS" are gone and it does not operate. Can someone lead me as to
how to fix this? I tried right clicking and format and that wouldn't work.

Boot to xp cd,recovery, select 1 For C: Press enter key for
password,type:DiskPart
In DiskPart,delete the partition(s),create one,when thru,press ESC key,type:
FORMAT D: /FS:ntfs D: being the new volume,do same for others,when thru,
type:EXIT Let xp start,go to run, type:diskmgmt.msc In msc L.click on the
volume,go to actions,all,select,make active,close out...

Just for precaution, My drive 1 is into 3 partitions (c,d,e), formatting "D"
will not effect "C", correct? "C" is my programs and don't want to mess with
that if I don't have to.

No, formatting D: will not affect other drives, though you will lose all
data on D:. What error occured when you tried to format it previously?
Assuming you don't care about what is on D:, have you tried deleting
and then recreating the partition/volume via disk management?

Do NOT make D: "active" , as was suggested.

When I choose format D in disk management it says" format did not complete
successfully"
I have another question, Could this problem be the reason whenever I try to
copy or transfer files I get a "Windows delayed write failed" message?

Meaning you get the write failure on a volume on the same drive? The fact that
the format started, suggest that the partition itself is sane.

If you suspect the drive is failing, evacuate your data immediately. Check SMART status.
Download and run the manufacturer's diaganostic utility. Most, if not all, OEMs
offer free diags on their respective web-sites.

Again, get your data off while you can. Don't waste any valuable drive spin time.
