hi there, need to know if i need to do anything special. Since this is
about xp home edition. Ok i want to get my son a new hard drive and remove
his old one. I know i could clone the orginal but would rather not mess with
the added expense and mess. Would love to just be able to insert new hard
drive and loan xp. I have xp home edition cd. DO i need any thing special.
Plus will it give me an error if i try to activate it. This is the same
machine and it would only be the hard drive that i am replacing.

Would appreciate any advise.

thanks

If xp is installed already on the computer, and add a new hd is all you need
to do,then set new drive as slave on same IDE chain. In xp,format the new
drive,then go to run,type:XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/r Agree to all in the
DOS window, when its thru,xp is now on new drive. Also,D: being new drive
but if asigned diffrent, then use that letter.

That is totally incorrect.

Using XCOPY in this way will not result in a usable copy of the drive.

Using a disk cloning utility will almost certainly be the quickest and
least complicated of the options.

To do it "your way" will actually require the following steps:

1. Back up all of the user data files etc. from the current drive to
a removable backup device such as a CDRW or DVD Writer. The Files And
Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP may expedite this part of the
process.

2. Install the new hard drive.

3. Install Windows XP on the new drive. Partitioning and formatting
of the new drive will be done as part of the install if you boot the
computer from the Windows XP install CD.

4. Install all Windows Updates. If your installation CD is the
original release or service pack 1 versions of Windows XP then you
should download the complete Service Pack 2 from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
and save it to a CD as part of step #1. You need to insure that
Service Pack 2 has been installed before you connect the computer to
the Internet.

5. Reinstall all of the application programs. Note that you will
need the original installation CDs and the appropriate product keys or
license codes for each.

6. Restore the user data files from the backups created in step 1.

7. Reconfigure the computer for user settings, email accounts and
passwords, etc etc etc.

You should not have any problems with the reactivation of Windows XP
on the same computer after replacing the hard drive.

Good luck

Most, if not all, hard drive maufacturers provide software and instructions
to accomplish exactly what you wish to do. Go to the new hard drive
manufacturers site.
