I have a home built w/an athalon 1.4Ghz cpu, 512Gig ram and an 80Gig
Maxtor drive.
I don't use it every day, it is my back-up PC.

I tried to boot to it today, and it gets to the XPproSP2 screen,
then reboots. No errors, just reboots. I have GoBack on it, and it
does not seem to matter how far back I have tried to restore, it
still get to the same place then reboots.

I tried the recovery panel to recover, but this does not work.

I removed the drive and changed it to a slave, put it on my other pc
as a Primary/slave to check it for erros...

The 2nd pc bios recognizes it correctly.
Device manager recognizes it correctly.
Windows XP SP1 Management console, disk manager, recognizes it as a
74.55 Gig NTFS, Healthy, active drive.

HOWEVER, it won't allow me to assign it a drive letter, and it won't
let me explore it.

Any ideas?? Suggestions?? I want to be able to recover the drive
data if possible. I can't get to the point to do an in place
rebuild... yet.
Also... it also has 2 partitions, and I used the 2nd partition to
keep backups... on...... but now that I think about that, I did not
see the other partition when I tried the re-install on the origional
pc...

GoBack inserts itself into the boot process. Have you checked with their
technical support for possible fixes for this?

This is also a GoBack issue. It's signature on the drive still exists even
when installed on the different computer. The presence of that signature
interferes and causes what you are seeing (or not seeing) with XP Disk
Management and Windows Explorer.

If you are unable to regain access to your XP installation via GoBack
troubleshooting and since Recovery Console is doing you no good, you will
probably need to resort to a complete reinstall/rebuild of the system.

I was able to run FixMBR, and FixBoot in the recovery console, I
installed the drive in the "other" pc, and I was able to get to my
data, but after re-installing the drive in the "origional" pc it
still won't boot.

This machine had previously had both SP2 RC1, then RC2 on them, had
both RC1 and 2 un-installed per Microsoft approved procedures, then
had SP2 public release installed.

I NEVER created a Release Candidate Slipstream.

Since it would not boot, I put my publicly released SP2 Slipstream
CD in, booted to the cd, and proceded to "repair" the "old" XP Pro
SP2 windows installation.

After it finished, I checked the Windows Update service, and found
it wanted to download and install XP SP2.

I checked what version was currently installed, and to my suprise,
it said I had SP2 V.2149 (RC2)??????????

I can't uninstall that, because it isn't "installed"
I can't re-install RC2, because SP2 public release IS installed.

Catch 22.

At least I can now recover my stuff, but will need to do a complete
new install.

THanks for the advice, tho.

Sure sounds like it. At least you recovered your data. Thanks for getting
back to the newsgroup with details on how you've worked this out.

Huraaaaaaaaaaaa!!! fixed. It seems that SP2RC1 WAS still there.
Hidden by... me.

Ran uninstall from the hidden directory, and then did a fresh dl of
SP2, and it installed w/out a hitch.

Hidden by you? Oops. I've never done anything like that <cough> on my
systems. :)

Glad to hear that you have this solved now and thanks for the update!
