hard drive speed

I have an internal laptop harddrive, and an External Harddrive on USB
2.0 I want to run video capture. Is there a way to test which drive is
running faster? The Laptop one(5400 rpm) or the external one (7200rpm).
I thought maybe since it was on USB not IDE that it would be slower,
even if it has a higher RPM rating.

Video capture using what to do the video capture ?

The hard drive doesnt matter with decent modern digital video capture.

Yes, run a benchmark like SiSoft Sandra.
The Laptop one(5400 rpm) or the external one (7200rpm).

Almost certainly the external drive, tho that may
not be true if the video capture is being done
using an external USB2 video capture box.

Yes, with identical drives. Not by that much tho.

Unlikely. Likely the external with be considerably faster.

That is very simple.

Assuming
- C: is your laptop drive
- F: is your USB drive

Use performance monitor and watch for:
- "Disk Write Bytes/sec" on C:
- "Disk Write Bytes/sec" on F:

Get Eraser utility:
http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/
Remove "Cluster Tip Area" in preferences
for "Unused Disk Space" tab.

To measure USB drive write speed, start Perfmon and run
Eraser to wipe "Unused space on drive" F:
Watch "Disk Write Bytes/sec" counter for drive F:

To measure laptop drive write speed, start Perfmon and run
Eraser to wipe "Unused space on drive" C:
Watch "Disk Write Bytes/sec" counter for drive C:

I have got 16.5MB/s for my C: and 10.5MB/s for my USB drive.

The external USB 2.0 7200 RPM drive is probably faster.

Sandra is useless as a disk benchmark.
