pete

i just upgraded from windows 98 to windows xp.my drive is
4.76 gb but now i only have 894 mb left(18%)free space. I
don't believe I have that many programs i have installed
to take up that much space. I can't download windows
service pack 1 "not enough free space"
How can I tell what is on my c: drive and what I can
safely remove?

Hi Pete,

That really is too small for WinXP, however.....

- Uninstall unneeded programs (control panel/add &remove)
- If you opted to backup the existing system when upgrading, remove the undo
file (Warning: this means no going back to Win98)
- Delete everything in temp folders, catch both:
C:\Windows\temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp
- Control panel/system/system restore tab/settings, reduce the space
allotted to SR
- Control Panel/Internet Options/general tab/TIF settings, reduce the size
allowed

You might also want to consider reducing the pagefile.sys depending upon how
you use the system.
