i have winxp home, hp pavillion. the best way i can
describe the hard drive malfunction is like a needle
contiuously skipping on a record. a message
appears,'operating system not found'. pressing
cntrl/alt/del starts the drive loading normally, with no
further problems after started. seems like the arm that
reads the disk is malfunctioning. what causes this, and
how to fix? thank you!

let me just say i know nothing about backing up files.
probably because i have never had any problems. any
pointers?

At the very least, copy all the files you can't bear to lose onto some sort
of removable media, like CDs. You can always reinstall programs, but if
you've got your Master's Thesis or the formula for the million-dollar secret
sauce on the computer, you're going to want those files somewhere safe.

If you have a CD/DVD writer, then you can copy all your data, email
and so on from your hard disk on to CD, so you can restore them later.
You can either use the File TRansfer Wizard or NTBackup to backup to a
file and burn the file to CD.
