a friend of mine just bought a dell laptop with a 30gb hard drive. After
looking at the C: drive it states... free size 20.1gb - Total Size 24.3gb.
This doesn't seem like a 30bgb hard drive to me. Is it, does dell put so
much crap on their laptops that it takes up 10gb. does anyone know?

That looks like a 24.3 gb drive to me, 4.2gb is used and you have 20.1gb
free, unless there is some quirky problem where you computer can only
address 24.3 gb or something, but that would be unlikely.

Missing space is most likely due to the formatting and a
Dell hidden partition. Advise that you leave it alone, it's
probably fine. Add another drive if you need more capacity.

Dell adds hidden crap and that takes up some space.

ALSO a HD gigabyte is the proper meaning 1,000,000,000 bytes. A bizarre
standard, that has been hard to kill, got started in the computer industry
where they change the definition of 'giga'. So for the OS and format
command 1 gigabyte is 1024 x 1024 x 1024 = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Some of the
difference is there in that 7.4% difference.
