hard drive size incorrectly displayed

i have windows XP home. My bios tells me I have a HD of
185 gb-this i think is correct. However it only appears as
137 gb in explorer disk c properties. help much
appreciated thanks
 
I would imagine the size your BIOS is reporting is the total drive size,
while what is reported in Windows Explorer is the amount of free space
available.

Id this a system from a manufacturer like Gateway, Dell, Compaq, HP, etc...?

If so, some of them put a partition on your drive with the restore
information so that you can restore your system to the same state as
when you unpacked it. Some also have the files so that you can create
the CD to restore your system.
