Hi all,

Is there a way to break into a hard drive that you don't
have access too. I'm new to being a sys admin. The
person I replaced locked everything down and no one can
get into the hard drives. He set the permissions to only
allowing him access and no one else. Not even the local
admin. And I've already tried to take ownership and that
didn't work. I'd really appricate any help anyone could
give me.

What happens when you try to take ownership?? Be sure to select replace owner on
subcontainers and objects when trying to take ownership. Also check Local Security
Policy/security settings/local policies/user rights assignments - take ownership of
files to make sure that the administrators group is included. If the files are EFS
encrypted [check file/folder properties/advanced or use the cipher command] you may
not be able to open them. You might also try using subinacl from the Resource Kit to
take ownership. --- Steve

If all that fails, you can also try changing the permissions by slaving the
hard drive in another computer, installing a second copy of Windows on the
computer, or Group Policy / Security templates within Active Directory. To
check whether group policy is the culprit, do Start, Run, MMC, OK on a
Windows 2000 computer or server and add the Group Policy and Security
Configuration snap-ins.
