Dont panic - its a wiped drive so no panic about data loss

just for "fun"

is it safe mechanicaly speaking to plug it in and go

i'd expect a big movement of air due to the spin but as its all the
platters are still screwed together ok inside i'm assuming its safe ?

any comments ?

p.s. merry christmas

The heads can move faster than the eye can follow. Drives
with clear lexan covers would be cool!

I think a torn off drive head (if it crashes) could make a nice hole
in your eye. Better wear safety-googles.

It'll be safe for people but not for hard drive. The only safe method
of running the hard drive with lid off is to do it in 100% dust free
enviroment. One speck of dust can ruin the r/w head and you could
lose a sizeable portion of the disk space if it doesn't become
unuseable completely.

Do it only for fun, don't store any valuable data.

ok - now i'm concerned

Well, I think the risk is small, but the potential damage is
massive and 7200 rpm is a lot. Better be safe than sorry.

as i said

"Dont panic - its a wiped drive so no panic about data loss"

but like Arno said - maybe i want my eyes to work

i have to add i tried with a drive with lid on but torq screws undone for a
few seconds

boy could you feel the air force against the case !

Not while it is spinning. Now, for a grain of (course) sand .......
