Hello! Acquired a used Presario PC. Had drive failed in test. Would like to
intstall a new drive, but unsure of procedure. Will I have to reinstall the
XP operating system also? Previous owner doesn't want the PC back. I thought
I would teach myself. Would like to know what steps to take. Thanks for any
help.

Usually. But it may be possible to clone the drive, depending on the
damage.

Open up the case. Out goes old hard drive, in goes new one. Compaqs
have these special screws you should avoid losing. You may need a t-15
torx screwdriver depending on the generation.

After you reinstall the OS, go to HP's (they now own compaq) website
and install the drivers.

Yes--the OS is on the HD. Replace the HD and you have to reinstall
unless you copy the data over (not an option if it doesn't work.)
