Hard Drive Reliability

I am building a new system and would like information on reliability
(mean time to failure etc) of Hard Drives. I'm considering using a 80GB
SATA 7200RPM drive. Is there data on reliability of the various
manufactures? Are 10,000RPM drives less reliable? Is there data on noise?

Go to the manufacturer's websites to find reliability data.
You can find noise data at:
http://storagereview.com/php/benchmark/bench_sort.php
Pull down the "Benchmark Database - Select Test To Sort"
menu and select "Idle Noise".

All I can say is that I have an 80GB Western Digital and its flawless.
I used to work in a PC shop that sold Maxtor drives & they are shite!

I need that answer as well! I wanted to take advantage of the present low
(UK) prices for new Hard Drives and bough a 160GB Desktop 7K250 for
£57.58.This is advertised as a Hitachi/IBM as Hitachi have recently taken
over that part of IBM and it had a three year warranty. I had an IBM drive
once before and was impressed by their service when it failed when out of
warranty. The new drive arrived from the mail order company but was DOA. I
returned it and the replacement was also DOA, I am now getting a refund but
will have to decide on another make to try next from a local supplier.
Believing that they must have a quality control problem I phoned Hitachi's
London support number to bring my problem to their attention. A girl with a
strong French accent answered and took the details, her only suggestion was
"damage in transit" I asked if they were interested in getting the HD back
directly from me and was told "That would be difficult as we are in Holland"
Evidently calls are diverted to their European HQ.

Me getting the same drive :) hope its not DOA as iam in australia, but
the place iam getting mine from has a 2 Year warranty so they would
take care of the replacment ect.
