Has anyone got any bright ideas on how to get the data of a Western Digital
(WD200) which is pretty well dead. It is making those dreaded clonking
noises and is unbootable/readable.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Jimmy.

well if your the gambling type, I have heard of people actually removing the
platters and putting them in a whole new housing. Not sure I personally
would try it though.

There is also freezing the HD. I've not ever tried this, but others
have reported a short window of operability.

Just an update - I rapped the HDD up so to cut down on moisture and placed
it in the freezer. Its been in there a good few hours (overnight) and I
will get to it later on today. Will let you all know how it goes.

Jimmy.

Well, it spent the night (well a good 12hrs) in the freezer and I have now
finally taken it out and hooked it up to a computer. surprisingly, it
works! The hard drive spun up like normal and windows proceeded to detect
it and all! Its currently copying the data across, with the exception of
the odd corrupted file. Will keep you posted on how it goes :-D

Good news, JW :-)
Hope you can get all the data off it before it warms up too much!
I've heard of this being done before, but never from anyone who has
actually done it.
We should all take note that this IS a viable option for anybody else
who asks in the future.
