Hard Drive Problems

I had this problem about a week ago, it went away by itself, and now it's
back again.
Vista stopped recognizing my SATA II HDD for no reason. What am I supposed
to do to get it working again?

Seeing as how it appears to be an intermittent problem - and it's a SATA, I
would check to insure the cable and power connectors are seated properly and
at least try a substitute SATA cable. Could be a problem with the hard drive
itself which can be tested with the manf diags. SMART drives store any
error codes and would give you an indication of a pending or intermittent
failure. Could be the system got overheated last time by block the air
vents or maybe a fan got turned off and the drive electronics sensed the
over-temp and shutdown.

How long was the outage last time?

I'm not sure. I just restarted my computer after trying to install some USB
drivers for an SD card reader, and when it came back on it was gone.
manf diags?

We've been talking about drivers in another thread. Here's our chance to
test
the theory that C:\windows\inf\INFCACHE.1 has been corrupted by installing
your new drivers.

Just rename INFCACHE.1 to INFCACHE.old and reboot. I did it and my
machine is still working perfectly. You will need to add 'take ownership'
to
the privileges of Users in its Properties>>Security dialog box before you
can
rename the file.

Yup, it all worked. Thanks.
