hard drive problems

I have trouble recovering my system. It is a windows xp service pack 2. I
have a dual boot hard drive ( i think) meaning i have two options each time i
turn on my laptop: load windows xp or do a full system recovery (if i do that
i my harddrive will be like brand new fresh from the factory).

well i tried doing the full system recovery, however when i do that i get a
blue screen of death saying that windows detected a problem and shut itself
down. Recommends that I scan for viruses (i did - spyware nothing else),
check for disk errors ( i did - came out fine) or check hard drive
configurations (i did - thus my question )

I went to device manager, devices, clicked on my hard drive and under
properties the optiion that says "device usage" is grayed out. Also it does
not say if it is enabled or disabled it's just blank( i assume enabled or
else i could not get into windows).

how do i fix that? and will it fix my problem.

I also tried to install a windows xp from a cd. I attempted to do a windows
recovery and a full installation, both failled because it could not find a
hard drive...hm wierd.

any help much appreciated. thx

p.s. taking the laptop to the manufacture is not an option...i don't have
warranty...friend gave me this laptop

Boot into your BIOS and set the CD drive to boot before the Hard drive,
Install your XP CD and reboot, watch the screen closely and it will tell you
to press any key to boot from the CD drive.
Click to install XP and as you work into the screens,
Delete all Partitions to clean the Hard drive.
Create new partitions and format using the NTFS file system.
Install XP.

Good Luck

If you actually booted from a win cd, tried to install and you got a msg
stating 'no hard drive' either you have a loose connection or the hd has
failed.
If you know the make of hd, visit hd manu site and download/create their hd
checking utility
