I've encountered a problem when re-formatting my hard drive. I was getting
problems with system stability so I tried a re-install. Now I cant get my
recovery disk to work or get the computer to boot from the hard drive.
Could I have deleted something critical from the drive or is the drive duff?
Or, could the motherboard be dodgy? The recovery disk shows the partitions
but wont go any further.
It is a SATA drive (Maxtor) and I have Windows XP home edition SP2.
Can anyone please help?
Thanks in advance
Dave

Since you don't say what formatting problems you had and give no real
reason to have formatted to begin with being that it probably isn't that old
I would try formatting again.

Thanks for the reply.
I've tried that mate but it wont do it.
I get messages saying the drive cannot be accessed.

I would try another cable first. Then the connections to the drive and the
mobo. It is unlikely that you damaged the drive unless you dropped it.

run a harddrive diagnostic...
you can get it from maxtor's website

While doing a fresh install of XP from the Full version CD, you will need at
one point need to install the SATA drivers from a floppy.

Dave, like Jimmy with the info it’s only speculation.

What is the brand and model of your motherboard?

What CD, DVD and other hard drives do you have installed on the
system.

Have you got a manual for your motherboard?

Have you been into the BIOS experimenting with all the settings?

What is your boot order in the BIOS?

Do you have an IDE drive with Windows XP plugged into the system?

How full do you think the drive is?

I don’t want to be an echo , however if you formatted your drive and
do not have a floppy drive installed, then the drive is probably fine.
All you need to do is work out a way to load your SATA drivers?

I am old and use floppies, I’ve heard SATA drivers can be a bugger to
load with a CD drive?
