I use my computer, my hard drive works normally, but when
I stop using it for about a minute the hard drive starts
writing constantly. When I come back to use it, it takes
about half an hour before the hard drive actually comes
back to normal operation. The PC is a P4 1.8Ghz with
256Mb of RAM with a 20Gb hard drive. This problem has
only recently occured. I have checked for viruses, we
have the latest updates downloaded daily to our network.
I have run the latest Ad-Aware on it, but only found 1
instance of Alexa, but nothing else. Any suggestions you
can offer would be greatly appreciated.

If you have other background routines that haven't
finished (LIKE virus scan or updates or defrag) they will
become active when your platform is idle.

Check the system (CNTL ALT DEL once) and look at the
percentage activity next to each routine or application.
When you have identified that you will know where to start!

Otherwise, you have a defective hard drive.

In that case, defective hard drive seems the most
logical. System Idle is at 98%-99% most of the time.
Even now as I type this the hard drive is whurring away,
and the system idle is only at 95%. Thanks for your help
at any rate.

I had the same problem with my wife's computer a few months ago not long after getting high speed internet access. Run AdAware or some other spyware detection software. My wife had over 40 running on her machine. When I removed them, the PC sped up remarkably and the hard drive became quiet once again.

Yeah, had already tried Ad-Aware Jim, only found 1 item,
and this was the latest version of Ad-Aware I used as
well. So it isn't anything like that.

Make sure when using Ad-Aware to get the latest updates which the most
recent list of spyware so that you are sure to detect all. Just cause you
got the latest version of Ad-Aware you don't necessarily have the latest
updates. At the bottom right of Ad-Aware click on check for updates now.
It's like your virus software that needs to be updated with the latest virus
definitions weekly.

Yeah, what I meant by the latest version was the latest
update, sorry for not being clearer on that. I have
exhausted all possibilities it would seem, so am going
for a system re-install and we'll take it from there.
