Hard Drive Problem

Hey,

I'm currently building a new system for the first time, but have come across
a problem. I have just installed 2 HDD, Floppy Drive and CD-Rom drive, but
when I go to power on the system nothing happens, apart from the fans etc
going on?? Is there something I have done wrong here. I have the 2 HDD
connected together and into the primary motherboard connector, and the
CD-rom drive into the secondary slot, and the floppy drive in its own slot.

Any help would be great.

Why do you think this is a hard drive problem? Disconnect power to all the
disk drives. If the system still doesn't at least show the BIOS splash
screens, then the problem is not in the hard drives, floppy drive or CD-Rom.
A system needs clean power and a working CPU to POST. If your system is not
posting, you need to double-check that your power connections are OK and
your CPU is installed correctly. OH, and it's helpful to have a good video
card properly installed (of course) so you can see what the system is doing,
if anything.

If you disconnect power to the hard drives and that changes the symptom,
then it's time to double-check the master/slave jumper settings on all your
disk drives. -Dave

Build and test a little at a time

disconnect all wires going to your drives

then see if the machine will post...
troubleshoot from there...then add components one (or two) at a time

keep testing as you go

This probably won't be the answer but it happened to me when I switched on
the PC I had built for the 1st time. There are two separate power connectors
on the motherboard - one for the motherboard itself and a smaller conenctor
for the CPU. Are you sure you have conencted the CPU power cable?

Yeah have double checked this .... both power connectors and connected to
the motherboard ....

In many mobos, the cpu-fan connects to a connector on the mobo which
reads just that--"cpu fan" or "fan cpu". hth, s BTW, check your hard drive
jumpers for correct slave/master connections. And if 1 of the hd's is a WD,
reverse the slave/master arrangement, with the appropriate jumpers for this
new arrangement.

Firstly, I assume you mean "when you power on the system and press on
soft-power-on button, which is correctly connected to the motherboard".
If you don't mean this then your problem probably lies there.

Otherwise, go back to basics, try powering up with just the mobo,
videocard, memory and processor and see if you get the BIOS screen. If
this works, add the other components back one at a time until it fails
and, bingo, you have your problem.
