hard drive partition

i have just got a second hand computer and it has 2 partitions on it, the first is only 3.16gb in size and the other15.4gb, i keep getting a low disck space message and i am trying to update XP but there is not enough space, can i expand partition space or will i have to format drive?
 
Mark, if you have a WinXP CD then I would delete the partitions you
have now and create two new ones.
I would allow at least 6G for XP. If this computer does not boot
from a CD then you can use a bootdisk
and fdisk will partition and format for you. You can get one at
www.bootdisk.com Otherwise the XP
CD will also delete, create and format partitions for you.

if you are at all familiar with the command promt you can go there to remove or expand partions. Just go to start and run and type cmd and then hit enter. This will take you to the command promt. After that type: diskpart . once you have done this you can type : help and it will show you the commands that you can use to adjust or remove your partions but remember when you remove the partition I am sure it will remove your data too. So I would ask a tech how to safley use the diskpart command. that is if you go this route there are others. Also you may not be able to remove the partion if it has your boot info on it. WEll good luck

PICK A GOOD 40 UP SOMETIMES AT BESTBUY FOR 40 BUCKS WITH
REBATE.COPY INFO TO NEW DRIVE THEN PLACE AS
MASTER,FORMATE YOUR 20 GIG AND USE IT AS A SLAVE (WHAM
YOU HAVE 60 CAPACITY)40 USABLE LEAVING YOU 20 OPEN AND 20
FOR FILES.
