hey folks, ive been away for a while but i have this problem.

i have a maxtor 120 gb hard drive. i have used it to the point where it has only 2 gb free space. i dropped it about 6 months ago. when i try to connect it, its visible in BIOS but not in windows and it makes this horrible sound. i have been very scared to take it to anybody to see if they can fix it but im in UK for a week, in london to be exact and i was wonderin if you could tell me who i can take it to. i was thinkin of just transferring everything to a new hard drive. thanks very much for ur help.

If you dropped it you may have damaged it.
May be best to get all the data off it while you can, just in case it dies.
If your using XP go into Computer Management.

To open Computer Management, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. You should then be able to see the hard drive.

Hope this helps:thumb:

tried that. its not there. is it normal to be recognised in BIOS but not computer management? if its damaged does that mean i cant get anything from it?

If you can not see it in computer management then you may have a problem.
Are the jumper setting all set ok? And all leads connected ok?

Correct ...

Data recovery will cost.

yeah everything is connected. ive checked and rechecked ... its been 6 months since it dropped lol... correct meaning i cant get anything from it? and data recovery will cost meaning couple hundred?

Can you see if it is seen in another computer?
If not then as Muckshifter said it will cost £££
Have you looked at the sponsor on the right of this page "disklabs data recovery"
They may be able to help?

... and it makes this horrible sound
HDs don't make this noise, it is knackard and if you have data "worth" saving then you'll need a data recovery service ... even then, they will not guarantee you'll get all your data.

:)

nope, cant see it in other computers. well i guess its done then. not that important that i will spend a fortune on it. anyways thanks for the help.
