Hard drive Noisy - How much life left?

29 more continuous hours.

As it nears the end of its rotational life expect solar flares to eminate
from the ports of the laptop.
In the last 5 hours the laptop will diminish in size exponentially to the
increasing hard drive squeeling sounds.
Finally in the last moment a puff of smoke and no trace will be found except
one particle of silicon.

Fujitsu 12GB laptop drive has constant high pitched whine but tests ok with
mfg diagnostic software.

Here is a 'video' of the noise, notice power down at the end.

Now the only question is do you put up with the noise, using
it till it fails on you or just go ahead and replace it,
being glad you had enough advanced warning to copy off your
data (or are you one of those wise souls who makes regular
backups?) ?

I'd go ahead and replace it, unless you feel the notebook is
too old to deserve a new drive and you plan on getting a new
notebook instead. If the whole thing still works, you could
probably auction it off for $100. If you wait till even
more goes wrong with it, suddenly it's a total loss, not
cost-effective to fix.

Backup is not an issue, no critical data here. It's a secondary 'play'
computer.

Dell PIII C600's still fetch $300 on ebay and it will likely last another 5
years so it is worth
keeping (to me) Since data is not critical, I'll see if I can live with the
whine otherwise I'll replace it.

Thanks

Really? I'll sell it immediately if you can get 300 out of
it. It might last 5 years but within that time frame you
may also need new fans, new battery(s), new hard drive.
There's $200 and given some of the market competition you
might find a new one for $500 or less, especially near Black
Friday.

FOR GOD'S SAKES MAN SAVE ALL OF YOUR DATA!!!

I had this exact same thing happen to my laptop and I was too stupid to
do anything about it. I listened to the noise for awhile trying to
diagnose and then boom, it was dead. Any second that it's still
working is another second for you to copy off your data.

Usuallym if the hard drive is noisy, its not a good sign. Best go to
backup your data first, then find Fujitsu support!
