I have had problems with the hard drive never stop running when loading
certain programs. It will run for hours without stopping. Very strange and
annoying. This happens when I run media center for example. Version Beta 2
Build 5384

If I remember correctly media center works as a DVR so if you're watching
live TV at the time then it will be constantly writing to your hard drive
creating and maintaining it's buffer for rewind, pause, etc. Other programs
have different requirements as well. Such as a game may require 1GB RAM and
that's all you have on your machine. When you launch the app then the OS
will have to use disk cache to compensate for the demand on RAM. If you've
recently installed Vista then it could also be the indexer running to create
and maintain it's index. This should clear up in a couple days depending on
the speed of the system and it's uptime (I suggest leaving it on overnight
the first few days.) Then it will only write when there are changes made to
the file system though it won't be as overwhelming as the first few days.

today I found out that the hard drive keeps running simply by just typing a
word document. It's a random problem with no real fix or understanding why. I
closed all programs. I am using 756mb ddr 333. However, when this problem
occurs cpu is at 4% and virtually there is no demand on the system.

Same problem here...but I don't even have to run a program. Vista starts and
the drive chatters constantly. Driving me nuts! Someone HELP!!!!!!

OH I FEEL YOUR PAIN! I have to shut my computer down before bed because i
can hear that damn hard drive running all night all day.. I got a bad ass
system with ATA drives and dual core.. doesnt matter. Vista is running
something on the system that persists.. its not virus or indexer. ive
checked all the logs, cant find any task or performance tuning scheduled.
its a clean install.

my theory is with RAID.. Vista is not as tolerant when RAID combines
multiple drives into one big "C" which Vista sees. it cannot read
efficiently so it loops somehow..

If you go into task manager do you see any processes running?
Were you watching Live TV? IF so the time shift recording may still be
running?
And if it is shift to watching a recoded program and then close MC.

Running raid0 and not seeing this problem...Did for about 24hrs when first
built (Jan 31st) but not since...goes to sleep when it is supposed to and
that is it...How long have you been running Vista on it ??
