Hello, i have a maxtor hard drive, 60gigs, however my system tells me there
is only 48 gigs available, upon checking it out, i discovered a little over
7gigs of unaccounted space, looks like there was a partition there at one
time and someone did not delete it properly, am wondering how i can
eliminate this and recombine it with the rest of my drive. Have winxp home
os, tried using computer management and hardrive management but the delete
partion option is not available, am wondering what else i can try??

Partition Magic. Should let you delete the additional partition and
enlarge the primary one. But be careful to make backups of everything
important first. Partition Magic is knowen to frequently trash drives
completely.

Another thing is to blank the drive with zeroes. E.g. get tomsrtbt
(->google) and with the drive as first drive do a

cat /dev/zero > /dev/hda

and let it run a minute or two. This will wipe the beginning of the
disk and any partition information as a consequence. Afterwards you
should be able to create a new partition with the whole capacity.

Hey Arno, thanks a bunch, got my hands on partition magic and resized the
drive, worked very well, with no trouble to the drive itself, and yes i did
have it backed up anyway LOL, again thanks

You are welcome. These things have just gotten far too
complicated...
