Hard Drive Installation and Large Block Memory

I use Windows XP Pro Upgraded edition. I recently
purchased an 80 GB Hard Drive and installed it. After
using the computer a short time and loading software
packages I noticed that I kept getting a message that
said, "memory getting low." Upon examination I found out
that somehow the memory configuration has the C drive
with 2 GB of memory (where all of the software is
loaded), and another drive D, has 76 GB (the rest of the
memory). I would like to have one drive C with all of
the memory but do not know how to make this change.
Further I would like to make the change without having to
reinstall XP. How do I convert the system to have one
drive with all of the memory on it? Thank you.
 
Hi,

I think you are confusing things. The figures you see are those for space on
the drive, not memory. WinXP would not create a 76GB VM file. The error
messages could be because "C" is running low on space, moving the
pagefile.sys to "D" would help.

Memory refers to two things: 1) The physical installed memory on the
motherboard and 2) the amount of virtual memory the system is using. For the
average home user, the combined total will rarely exceed 2GB unless you do
some serious autocad or graphic designs.

Please post back with some specifics of your existing system, and perhaps we
can straighten this out for you.

To change the partitioning so that you have only one drive/partition
will require a program such as Partition magic, if you don`t won`t to
have to install XP again.

How it got partitoned as you describe may have happened when you updated
or was like that when you installed the new drive?

I personally would have several partitions but at least minimally
C: OS ONLY and swap file
D: Applications and data files

Keeping apps separate from the os can prevent many problems. and it
makes defragging a little quicker.
