What is with Vista B2 hammering the disk right after logon for 2-4 mins? I
have a Dell XPS 600 3.0Ghz Dual Core Pent D 2 GIG RAM 60GIG 10K SATA drive on
an nForce4 motherboard .... I mean, this is a rockin' computer and it's just
getting hammered so much the first 2-4 mins I literally can't do anything
because if I do I'm sitting here waiting anyways while the system catches up.
I do notice that DWM.EXE is running and using some processor while it's
happening?!??! anyone know what is causing this and if it's a bug or by
design or what??? Thx! Billy

See if Dfrgntfs is running, new system performance setup in vista seems to
have an auto schedual that, for me, started within first 5min after a clean
install.

nope, didn't see that process when i sorted by name. Usually I sort by CPU
to see what's goin on, but all I see mostly is the DWM.EXE & SVCHOST.EXE
running at lot during the first 2-4 mins while the HD is getting hit. What
could be going on? No way to tell what's hitting the hard drive?

Go to Control Panel | System and Maintenance | Administrative Tools and run
Performance Diagnostic Console.

That's a great tool! Thanks for pointing me to it. I'm not sure if I can
pinpoint the highest disk user because there are so many things that pop
in/out of that during the 2-4 mins of high disk utilization. I do see that
there are an abundant amount of svchost sessions that are doing all types of
different things. I thought for a minute it might be the Windows Search
Indexer because I saw that a lot, so I disabled the Windows Search service,
restarted, but still had the 2-4mins of disk usage before windows turned the
system fully over to me.

Does this happen to you as well, or anyone else? Is there really a way to
pinpoint what's doing it or do you think it's just the culmination of all the
things that load in Vista upon Logon?

That was one of the problems I had with BF2, the drive would run about 30
seconds after I started the game, which froze everything until it quit. I
think it was paging so I got more memory and it seemed to help.

I don't really notice the problem if BFME, but just after window boots up. I
can't seem to pin point whatever is the real culprit. Is anyone else having
this problem and does anyone know what is causing it?

Tester_Bill:

I have it with 2gigs of RAM. Per TaskMgr it is svchost.
