I have just moved a slave DATA ONLY drive from a win2000
pc to a new win xp pc..went into disk management to look
for it, and it's there. but It lists it as a foreign
disk, and to convert to basic disk, I need to format and
lose everything. I just need it for data only, is it
ABSOLUTELY necessary that I format it? Any suggestions?
THANKS in advance!!

Hi, C. L.

Maybe you've misinterpreted something in Disk Management. "Basic disk"
usually means as opposed to a "dynamic disk"; were you using dynamic disks
in Win2K?

What you probably need to do is to Initialize that HD. Check the Help file
in Disk Management for details on this step. Search for "foreign disks;
moving to another computer" and for "initializing status".

If that HD was the typical drive used in the typical way, it should be a
painless procedure to move it to a new PC and use it with WinXP. There are
the obvious steps, such as making sure the jumpers, cables and BIOS settings
are correct, and drive letters are assigned or reassigned correctly. And in
some cases, the HD must be initialized in WinXP Disk Management.

If there is data on the drive that you need, re-install it into the W2k
machine and copy over to the primary drive.. then reformat the drive..
