Hard Drive Formatting Error During Install

I am trying to install windows 2000 advanced server on a home machine to setup a network. The desktop is a dell 6736 running only 667 mhz. It has 384 mg of ram, and a 40 gig western digital hard drive (model wd400bb) standard internal eide. The jumpers are set properly on the cd and hard drives, and the bios is somewhat updated. After booting from the win2k as disc, it gets as far as letting me partion the drive into two 20 gigs, selecting the one for the installation and completing the formatting at 100 percent. Then I get the message in so many words "this drive cannot be used, it is either damaged or....please select anohher drive."

This is the second drive with the exact same error. I ran western digitals diag from a floppy and the drive checked out fine. I don't have another machine to test the hard drives on. All the others in the house are laptops. Please help...thanks.

This could be a hardware limitation and occurs independently of the
operating system. This should not be an issue on a newer computer if their
BIOS supports INT13 Extensions and this feature is turned on, which it is by
default. Also this article may help.

Thanks for the reply, but that article seems to apply to scsi. Also, I was previously running windows 2000 pro and the computer was fine. I think I will try reinstalling win2k pro and then win2k advanced server. The article you suggested helped me to understand, and think it put me on the right track. I just don't think this machine is incapable of running win2k advanced server

I don't want to have to buy another computer just to setup a server at home for the laptops throughout the house

Thanks again
