Hard drive filled with .ppf files

I have a Windows 2003 Advanced server running Exchange Server 2003 and Panda
BusinesSecure antivirus. Unknown to me, the C partition of the drive filled
up to capacity (10gb) over the course of a few days with literally thousands
of files that look like:

progr{abbfgr-tyycbb-667hjgxsfg-3453fg-ghhfgh766-dgdfg-44554ghgh-serwt}.ppf

I booted to the recovery console so I could delete them because it was
literally taking an hour to get the server to boot and it was having a fit
about C being full. It has been deleting these files for about 5 hours now
and I have no idea how much is left. There has to be about 7gb of these
files and they are all about 2068k. The server itself is a dual P4 3.06
with an array of 36gb 15k rpm drives. It's no slouch, yet it is taking
hours to delete these files.

Where did these files come from? I wouldn't think it was a virus since
Panda is active and updated every few hours. The server does not provide
any Internet services.

I searched everywhere on the net, but all I really get is information about
what the .ppf extension is used for.
 
I should ammend my post. It does host Exchange Server 2003, but smtp
traffic doesn't go directly to it. Mail goes to a gateway first where is is
scanned for spam and viruses and then it is forwarded to the server I
described below.
