Hard drive failure

I had a hard drive fail with an error message and I could not get it to
reboot without an error message. I got a new hard drive and it's up and
running. Is there a way to slave my old drive to recover my files?

Set the jumper on your new drive to 'Master', set jumper on the old drive to
'Slave'.
Reboot and see if explorer can find the old drive and the files you want to
recover.

JS

Explorer recognized the drive just fine but when I try to access it comes
back with the prompt "The drive is not formatted". The messages box has Yes
and No options for formatting.

Maybe, depends on what the failure was and whether you know
how to set the old drive to slave and leave the new drive as
master so it boots first.

If the old drive is non-functional and you will spend some
money, there are companies that will take the platters out
and install them on a functioning motor and recover your
data, for a fee.

Mount the old as a slave and see if you can copy the files off.

Instead of connecting it as a slave drive on the same IDE channel as
your new hard drive try setting the drive jumper back to where it was
before (master) and connecting it as the master drive on the secondary
IDE channel, using the data cable from the CD/DVD drive(s).

That will eliminate any possible conflicts that can sometimes result
when two drives of different vintages and from different manufacturers
are connected as master and slave on the same IDE channel.

Good luck
