Help! I really want to recover my old data. I have an internal Maxtor
200GB in a metal gear box, and after 6 months the drive seems to be
crapping out. It starts up and spins-makes clicks sounds, then does
this again a few times and just runs after that. The enclosure is good.
Runs my new WD drive well.

This old drive does not show up in My Computer. It is not even showing
up under administrative tools --> Computer management--> Disk
Management. When I populate the Volumes section under the Maxtor 6
LR200RQ USB Device Properties, it says Disk 2, Type: Unknown, Status:
Unreadable, Partition Style: Not Applicable, Capacity 0MB, 0MB, 0 MB..

HELP! Any suggestions? Could the freezing the hard drive trick work>?
How much is it to data retrieval?

I threw it in the freezer and will take it out and try tomarrow. If
that doesn't work I plan to tap it a few times with a screwdriver. If
that doesn't work, I'd assume it's dead and will try something like
this:

I have an ionizer to keep dust at bay. Any tips and advice if I have to
move a mechanical part by hand? :)

they charge an arm and a leg for obvious reasons............they can do it
and you are desperate.

forget the screwdriver part..........

what about trying another control board first. Search ebay or tinternet for
precisely the same drive ie one that has identical codes as printed on
yours.

LOL oh well, the stuff I wanted was easily replaceable. I just have to
donate a little to my torrent group to get my ratio back up :P

I was able to turn the old drive on and kinda apply a short pressured
hit in the middle of the starting up drive. This allowed it to be
finally recognized by my computer. I took a screenshot of the mass
folder of stuff to replace. Couldn't really copy pasta anything, but
then that's ok. :) Drive is now put to rest after a long life of 6
months. Will take out platters later. Damn maxtor drive zzt zzt.

That can work if you have a dry joint.

No point in trying that, thats for stiction which isnt seen much anymore.

Makes much more sense to use professional recovery if the data
matters and you can afford it. Some are more reasonably priced.

Its unlikely to be successful.

If you got the drive to boot why didn't you copy the data to another drive
or DVDs? I've had a Maxtor HD trouble before and avoided them but maybe
they'll get better under Seagate ownership. Wife's Seagate 20Gb drive
died too but no telling what she did to tthat thing.
