Hard Drive Failing - Clicks of Death

Hey,

My friends hard drive is about everything but dead.

It's recognized by the system, but just mainly clicks and now I can't
access any files on it.

1. Any last-ditch attempts I can try to get it to work for a few
minutes to transfer some files?

2. He is going to need a data recovery service if he can't get his
data off the drive. Any suggestions for one?

PS This may sound strange, but can parts be swapped out from an
identical drive to make his work? What exactly is the 'clicking'
sound?

forget the data recovery service...
it will be over $1000!!!

try putting the drive in the freezer for a while
it has a small chance of working

also ...if that fails...just try running it for a few hours
it *might* start working again once it's warmed up a bit

Stop using it.

A data recovery service may well swap parts, in a clean room. The
clicking is likely the actuator.

The only thing you can do is change the circuit board. Don't even think of
changing parts inside the drive.
What exactly is the 'clicking'
sound?

It's the head, like a needle on a record player (remember them?), it is
jumping rapidly from the start to the end of the platter.
